Recently, our principals wrote about the upcoming year for the El Reno Tribune. Here are some of their anticipations on the coming year! Welcome back students and staff!
As I sit here with my right leg propped up and feeling sorry for myself (It’s a long story involving two broken bones, a torn up knee, an old, bald dude, a mule and a horse trailer) I thought I might reflect a little on the past school year and get mentally and professionally ready for this school year. Last year was the proverbial roller coaster year. There were ups and downs with long stretches of flat track in between. Like most school officials I was bummed, but not surprised, by the defeat of the penny sales tax for teacher pay increases. I was more bummed that the legislature couldn’t find enough revenue to increase the pay level, but I’m very aware and understanding that the budget doesn’t have an easy fix. I’m planning on continuing to work with state leaders to try to solve the problem and find a way to pay our teachers what their counterparts in other states make for doing the most important job I can think of. All of that doesn’t really matter much. It’s last year’s news. At El Reno Public Schools we value our teachers, staff and faculty and want them to continue to build relationships and influence the future. In other words, our people are “ALL IN”. Our staff has committed to quit using pronouns of I, me, and mine and really focus on us, we and ours. #allin isn’t just some quirky hashtag. It’s really the way we all feel. It’s time for me to get on board. No more I, me or my. It’s about all of us.
This year we are busting at the seams. Our enrollment topped 3,000 students for a time last year. We were able to keep class size limited to 25 in nearly all of our schools and all of our subjects. One hundred percent of our students were taught by certified, highly qualified teachers. These were some of the best teachers on the Planet and we are thankful they are teaching our kids. I’m amazed at the amount of individual growth our students are experiencing on a daily basis. Throughout the school year, and even this summer, our students have been led by incredible educators and kids have proven time after time that the schooling they get is top notch.
We’re so proud and honored to work with the best educators in the entire world. Not just in Oklahoma, and not just in America, but in the world. We met our new teachers the last couple of days and truly believe these new teachers, combined with our experienced faculty and staff, will provide the foundation for incredible student learning. We will have more on the worldwide comparison of what we are doing here to some schools in other places later in the school year. But, for now let’s just leave it that our student’s education will be in great hands this year.
We are blessed to have an opportunity to work with our community in so many ways and not a day goes by that someone from El Reno or beyond doesn’t comment on our school system. Our certified and support staff across the district is very proud of our schools, our buildings, grounds and facilities. It takes everyone working together to make sure our kids have everything they need to be able to prosper at the next level.
Welcome 2017-18. We’re “ALL IN” here at El Reno Public Schools. We can’t wait to see what great things we accomplish this year.

El Reno High School – 2017-2018

Another year!! Same old Same old, right? Not hardly! In the world of education things are always changing. New tests. New accountability targets. New teachers. New students. We are always adapting, being flexible, and working to meet the needs of a new generation of students!! We have new programs and new approaches to help us. This year we roll out our Personalized Educational Path (PEP) Program to allow students to have more say in their educational journey and how, when, and where it takes them. This will be an exciting time that will inevitably come with great victories and unseen challenges we must meet. We welcome eight new faculty members to our family this year as well. We are excited about new partnerships with Redlands Community College to give our students more opportunities to prepare for post high school life. We are also in planning stages of beginning a school to work intern program with area businesses to once again open new doors for students and provide opportunities for the community to engage in our student’s journey.
New years bring new challenges and new hopes. In the end, however, it is all still about the kids. We are here due to a CALLING and a PASSION to work with students and build a brighter tomorrow for our community. That doesn’t change!! Our call this year is for everyone from teachers, to students, administrators, parents, and community members, to be ALL IN with EHS. From academics to all of our sports, fine arts programs, FFA, FCCLA, drama, student leadership, and all other school programs, we want to fully engage in the lives of students and the activities of EHS!!! Twenty years ago this August, I was starting my first year as a teacher at Roblyer Middle School. It is a great feeling to still have that sense of excitement as I welcome our students to Etta Dale Junior High for the 2017-2018 school year! We all have been working very hard to prepare for a new year. Our teachers and administrators have been attending conferences to improve themselves and offer the very best to our students. We are excited to bring back our Robotics program for the second year. We will be offering an additional section due to so many students requesting this class. We will be cheering them on as they represent El Reno at the state competition in the spring. Through a lot of work and training, we will debut our STEM lab in Lucus Hall. The STEM class is a hands on class where our students will be building different items, learning about electricity, wind farms and much more! Due to a donation, we were able to fund our STEM lab and classes. Back by popular demand and due to an overwhelming number of students who pre-enrolled in art, we will offer 6 classes. We have been very blessed with great teachers who go above and beyond for our students. Learning is not an option at EDJH! Every student is an important member of our EDJH family and we will cheer you on this year in the classroom, on the stage, on the field, on the court, on the mat, and in any other competition. #YouMatter

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how excited I am about this school year. I have moved from the position of Assistant Principal to Head Principal. I am thrilled to continue the dedication to academic success that Mrs. Brower began when she came 4 years ago. Our theme this year is travel and I am so delighted to be making this educational journey with our students, teachers, and staff each day.
We have adapted an old saying to fit our theme this year, “All Roads Lead to Roblyer.” We find this to be very true since this is the last stop for elementary school. Our students have had many great experiences leading up to Roblyer and we hope to make this year the best of all! We have built several opportunities in our schedule for the students to get extended learning time during the day for enrichment, remediation, and extra help on homework. We will have incentive programs that will help to encourage and reward the students as they work to meet their academic goals. We also have an after school program that is free to all 5th and 6th grade students. The after school program is intended to continue the enrichment and remediation the students need through activities that are intentionally designed.
We believe that traveling through a successful school year takes our parents, grandparents, family, friends, and community. We are excited to have the mentoring program back at RLC. We are truly blessed to partner with community members who volunteer to help our students focus on academic and social skills that help them to achieve their goals each day. We have an ELL tutor and an Indian Education tutor to assist many of our minority students with academic questions they might have. Our special needs students will be in the regular education classroom with their peers and will have the opportunity to work with both the regular education and special education teacher at the same time. We will be focusing on student growth and achievement this school year. They are the keys to achieving the goals we have set as a school.
We have a few new faces added to our already fantastic staff. Kale Simon will be filling the position of Assistant Principal. Abigail Campbell, Valerie Hiett, Elizabeth Tucker, Kasi Turner, and Ashley Wilson will be added to our fifth grade team consisting of Sharon Heldermon, Laurie Morris, and Pam Sullaway . They will all be housed in the south hallway. In addition, Eva Fancher and Oren Truitt are coming aboard our sixth grade team of Sarah Brower, Truda Hibbs, Carolyn Marshall, Kelli McDonald, and Michelle Whetstone. They will be housed in the north hallway. Our Special Education team consists of Jessica Crain, Melissa Lewis, and Lana Miller. Our elective team is comprised of Nathan Leonard teaching Band, Amanda Little teaching Vocal, and Shannon Watford teaching P.E. The electivies can be found in the East hallway. Sally Atkins is our librarian. Betty Adams, Theresa Barton, Summer Blackowl, Barbara Davola, Stehpanie Fulton, Danell Hockersmith, Barbara Hoselton, Sara Littleton, and Tasha Ludlow will be assisting our students each day. Renee Blount and Patty Kara are in the office to help students, parents, and guests as needed. As I mentioned above, we have an incredible team and they are dedicated to making this the best school year for our students. To quote Lao Tzu, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” We look forward to making this “journey” with our students each day.

Happy Back to School El Reno:
I must admit that the end of summer or as some like to call it, BACK TO SCHOOL, is my favorite time of the year. The teachers are coming back and empty hallways come to life with laughter, stories of summer adventures and beautifying the halls for the new school year. This year we have chosen Lincoln…Write Your Own Story, for our school-wide theme. Get ready Lincoln families for exciting adventures this year as we write our own third and fourth grade chapters. Finally, after we have glammed up the building, the best part is welcoming “our” children back and hearing all of their summer stories as we begin to “write “another school year. I AM SO EXCITED!!!
Our teachers have been working hard this summer making some new and exciting schedule and curriculum changes that will be beneficial to how each student learns. Many of our teachers have attended math or reading workshops over the summer and are excited to focus mainly on one or two content areas this year. We would love for you to hear all about our changes at our Parent Information evening, August 21st at 5:30 and 6:00.
I would like to welcome some wonderful new and very important people to Lincoln this year. Some might call them teachers or educators but this year they will be our wonderful and creative Authors! Kelsey Boismier, Celcie Guthrie, Tammy Poolaw, and Brittney Webster will all be joining chapter (grade) Three. Cheyenne Baxter, Scout Black, Brooke Dockum, Laurie Ross, and Lisa Wallis are all part of the fabulous fourth grade chapter. Stacie Riddle and Lori Stevenson are joining us with all their special education knowledge. Finally, last but not least is Allyson McFeeter keeping us in shape and teaching physical education.
So bring your school supplies and be ready to write your own adventure this year.

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! I hope you enjoyed a summer vacation filled with fun and exciting memories with your loved ones. We are thrilled to welcome all of you back to a new school year of learning and growing.
Personally, I am grateful and elated to continue this journey with you as your Principal. Over the past two years, I have had a chance to meet many of you and your children, and look forward to continue building a strong relationship with all of you in the upcoming year. As we enter this new school year, I want to let you know that our staff will be engaging in conversations around having a growth mindset, both for themselves and all students. We believe that every person in this building should always be growing and learning. Despite obstacles that may arise, we must always believe in our ability to rise above challenges and come out stronger on the other end.
We are excited to welcome some new faces to Rose Witcher. Chelsea Reed, Becca Yost, and Shelly Hudson are joining our 1st grade team. Cariann Davidson will be joining 2nd grade. Sam Hiatt will be leading our Fitness King and Queen to victory in P.E.. Carla Holstead and Emily Whitney will be joining our amazing team of assistance. Last but not least, Kara Watts will now be our Assistant Principal.
I want to personally invite you to attend our Open House September 7th from 5p-7p . This will be a great time to strengthen our Rose Witcher community, meet teachers and other families, and learn about the upcoming school year. We’ll begin the evening with a dinner from followed by an informational time with your child’s teacher. Our school goal is to see 100% of our families at this event. This year we will have many opportunities for parent involvement in school events and opportunities!! The Rose Witcher PTO will be meeting monthly and we look forward to your support!

Welcome back! We are excited and ready to start another year and see what all “ADVENTURES AWAIT” us on our journey this year. We welcome some new guides (teachers) to our building. Kristie Harris, Erin Wiewel, Rebecca Schweitzer will be teaching Kindergarten; Jerelyn Atchison and Christi Frank teaching in Head Start.
We will be WINNING along on our way in literacy, then, with STEM Fridays we will be exploring new ways to see different career options. In math, students will get hands on experiences in solving problems that come up in their pathway. We look forward to gathering around the “campfire” as we grow together this year. Thank you for joining us in your child’s early adventures in the classroom.
Many of you will remember the last two years the High School art club juniors and seniors have been given the challenge of creating a work of art using old ribbons from previous Oklahoma State Fairs. This year was no exception. Attached you will find pictures, videos, and an explanation of the project. We got the results back from the judging and although we did not win Best of Show, we did receive the honor of First Place for the high school division. Please take a moment to read the explanation page, as it details what the students did, and enjoy the videos and pictures attached. I am beyond proud of these students!

This year, the Juniors and Seniors of the El Reno High School Art Club decided to create a Koi fish pond with a waterfall. Unfortunately, circumstances did not allow any Seniors to work on the project, so it fell to the Juniors to create the sculpture. These students did not work with the ribbons last year, and the Seniors who did work on last year’s Peacock were unable to help, so there were unique struggles to overcome when working with the ribbons.
Only four students consistently showed up to work after hours and on weekends, logging over 30 hours of time in the art room to complete their sculpture. Other students helped sporadically for an hour or less, and there were approximately 10 students who worked on the sculpture in total. The team leaders were Destiny Bailey and Alec Samples who both spent the most time in the art room coming up with creative solutions to problems that arose. Jacie Cox and Creed Felton spend almost as much time on the project, and were wonderful at taking direction from the leaders and also giving input and ideas when appropriate.
This year, ribbons were bleached, dyed, painted, cut, ripped, shredded, and even hole punched to create the desired effects for the sculpture. The sculpture was put together using a base of chicken wire. Parts of the sculpture were pinned, hot glued, rubber cemented, and even sprayed with a clear coat of spray paint to ensure everything was secure.
Rock colors were painstakingly created using fabric dye and utilising using color theory to grey down ribbons that were the incorrect color. Fish scales were individually hole punched and placed onto masking tape fish bodies using rubber cement to create the effect of scales. Rocks were crafted individually by cutting and shaping floral foam then wrapping and pinning the ribbons to the foam. Hot glue would not stick to the green floral foam, so students had to pin the ribbons.. Hot glue was used to put most of the items together onto the chicken wire sculpture base, with some rubber cement used as well.
Students decided early on to create a sound feature for their waterfall, and the back of the sculpture has a sound machine to help with the effect of flowing water. To turn on the sound, plug in the machine. The cord comes from the back of the sculpture. Once plugged in, lift the back panel to expose the volume control and “Brook” button. Turning the volume up turns on the sculpture and allows you to select the desired volume. Press the “Brook” button once the volume is on. The button must be pressed each time the sculpture is unplugged and plugged back in, or the sound reverts to one of the other pre-loaded noises that came on the machine.
